Tectono-Stratigraphic Evolution of the Southern Midcontinent Margin
T. A. (Mac) McGilvery
AAPG Midcontinent 2021
Wednesday-Friday, October 6th-8th
Course Description: The tectonostratigraphic fill of the Arkansas Arkoma Basin, a 3-day 2-night trip led by T. A. (Mac) McGilvery, Univ. of Arkansas Geosciences.
- Day 1: Will illustrate the Mississippian/Pennsylvanian and Morrow/Atoka unconformities along I-49 south of Fayetteville. In addition, the sedimentology of the eustatically driven cyclicity of the Lower Atoka deposited across the Northern Arkansas Structural Platform that predated the Arkoma Foreland Basin will be examined.
- Day 2: Will illustrate the Middle Atoka as a complex shallow to deep marine fill of the early foreland basin phase dominated by subsidence with an elevated sediment supply. Field stops are located around Morrilton AR and Petit Jean State Park.
- Day 3: Will illustrate the Upper Atoka and Desmoinesian as the transition to axial, fluvial/deltaic fill of the late foreland basin dominated by sediment supply. Field stops will be around Mt Magazine State Park and Greenwood AR before returning to Tulsa Friday evening.
Logistics: The trip will depart at 7:00am on Wednesday, October 6th and will be returning in evening of Friday, October 8th. There will be a happy hour and introductory lecture the Tuesday evening before. Accommodation for both nights will be arranged in the area of Conway, Arkansas. Maximum occupancy 20 participants.
